Originally designed as a portiere, a decorative cover to a door or doorway and features an intricate display of Morris’ beloved floral and animal motifs, which breathe life and movement into this wonderous design.

Morris’ best inspiration came from his garden where he cared for native plants and developed his deep appreciation of nature.  Morris wanted to use his artistic designs to capture the essence of nature for the home.  He believed it was not possible to create exact imitations of nature, rather he created stylized depictions of plants and animals for his designs.

Designed by John Henry Dearle for William Morris and the Morris & Company.  Dearle was a talented textile and stained-glass designer and apprentice of William Morris. After the death of Morris (1896) Dearle took over the management of Morris & Co.
