In 1927, Wright designed a series of 12 monthly covers for Liberty magazine based on seasonal themes. Unfortunately, the publishers judged them as too radical for the time. The magazine returned Wright’s presentation drawings, which became the basis for later interpretations executed in diverse media. Each cover design exemplifies Wright’s practice of using the tools of his trade — T-square, triangle and compass — to create lively geometric designs.

Wright envisioned “Frozen Spheres” as the wintry cover art for the magazine’s January issue. Nearly a century later, Motawi Tileworks celebrates this study in geometry, asymmetry and color with its 8x8 ceramic art tile rendering of “Frozen Spheres.”

Motawi tiles are striking art pieces and installation accents. Each tile is made by hand and with heart in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The company embraces variation and handmade beauty with time-honored methods which produce a nuanced range of color with depth and translucence.

Actual Tile Size: Approximately 7 7/8” x 7 7/8”. As each Motawi tile is crafted by hand, dimensions may vary slightly by up to 1/16".

Tiles are 5/8" thick and have a notch at the back for hanging.
